Sixth Grade Curriculum

Bible
Students will develop Christ-like character by exploring the character traits of various people from the Bible. Class involvement will include memory work, timelines based on stories from the Old Testament, memorizing the books of the Bible (Genesis to Revelation), and developing special projects, videos, skits and games.

English
Literature
The study of literature provides a unique opportunity to view people, places and situations from a new perspective. Reading from a Christian point of view sharpens faith and challenges the intellect as we see the importance of maintaining values on both a personal and societal level. Students will develop strong vocabularies, explore authors, and identify elements of a literary work such as plot, theme, and setting.

Language Arts
Good communication skills are necessary to meet the demands of daily life. Competent writers, as well as speakers, learn to meet specific needs of audiences with a variety of perspectives. In order to share significant ideas with others, we must present our thoughts in a logical manner while conforming to basic grammatical principles. Through class discussion and individual study, we will develop effective writing techniques, which will include the basics of grammar and writing.

Mathematics
Sixth grade mathematics integrates a rich variety of problem-solving experiences with all mathematical topics. Computation skills and rote memorization of basic facts are essential in the mathematical process. Basic skills are introduced, practiced and assessed for mastery. Some of the topics studied include:
     • Whole numbers
     • Decimals and fractions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
     • Measurement
     • Geometry
     • Graphing
     • Ratios, proportions, percentages
     • Integers
     • Introduction to probability and statistics

As students understand and gain knowledge of numbers and number theory, their appreciation for the blessings of God’s creations, i.e. the number of stars, the grains of sand, will be amplified.

Science
Students will explore the earth and its surroundings from a Christian perspective. The students will investigate the earth’s geology, water systems, weather, climate and atmosphere, and the stars and planets of God’s universe. The curriculum is taught using hands-on activities, lab experiments, and teamwork projects.

Social Studies
By exploring the history, geography and culture of Asia, Africa, and Australia from Creation through today, the students will gain an understanding of the world and the people who occupy its land. The highlight of sixth grade social studies is an exciting Missions Festival in which students will be involved in writing a missionary, a research paper, creating an original speech and display board presentation, and making a food item native to a foreign country.
